After Solomon’s reign, the nation’s unity fractures as political and leadership tensions come to a head. The ten northern tribes rebel under Jeroboam I, while Rehoboam remains king over the southern tribes. This leads to the formation of two separate kingdoms: the Northern Kingdom of Israel and the Southern Kingdom of Judah, with Jerusalem as the center of Judah. This division is the defining moment that ends the united monarchy.

Later events—such as the Northern Kingdom’s fall to the Assyrians and the Southern Kingdom’s exile to Babylon, followed by the temple’s rebuilding—happen after this split and are consequences of the divided kingdoms, not the division itself.
